What is the Primo Newspaper Search?

Answer

Overview:

The Newspaper Search is a separate search, with different and more expansive Newspaper search records than what are included in the CDI. Ex Libris support has explained that there are hybrid Newspaper search collections where some records show in the CDI and some show in the Newspaper Search, identified by "yes" next to newspapers in the CDI tab of the collection:

hybrid newspaper

And there are "newspaper only" search collections, where the search records only display in the newspaper search. These collections should say "newspapers only" in that newspapers field above.

Activating the Newspaper Search:

To turn on the newspaper search, go to config, Discovery, Other, Central Index and Proxy and click the newspaper search box under Search Configurations:

set up newspaper search

Once the search is active, you'll need to turn on the link in your config, discovery, view configuration for each view where you'd like for it to appear:
show newspaper search

If you'd like the newspaper search link to show in your Primo VE header, you need to activate the link in your view configuration links menu tab. Note that the newspaper search CSS needs to be edited to match the rest of the CSS on your site.

Why separate searches?
At one point, Ex Libris considered completely removing newspaper searching from the everything search, but customer concern prevented this from happening. Ex Libris support explained the reluctance to include all newspaper search records in the CDI as follows in Salesforce case #00863322, "Newspapers are not main academic content, usage of this content is very low and many customers exclude NP search from their discovery."
In explaining their decision to keep the Newspaper search separate, Ex Libris explained, "The Newspapers Search makes an additional almost 1 billion newspaper items available for discovery. It maintains a newspaper facet on the main Primo search results page that allows users to easily switch to the newspaper search, delivering a simple and intuitive search experience. It also allows us to release more newspaper-specific functions such as the featured newspapers."
