How do we change our link resolver in WorldCat so that requests go through Alma Resource Sharing?

Answer

If you use WorldCat Local or WorldCat Discovery, make the change in the WorldCat Registry:

  • If you don't know your login url, look it up
  • The login that you choose will need to have admin rights to make changes to the "WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat Local" and "OpenURL Resolvers" sections.
  • Go to OpenURL Resolvers and add your Alma/Primo link resolver:

OCLC registry openurl

  • Once you have your Alma/Primo OpenURL Resolver set up, go to WorldCat Discovery and WorldCat Local->Place Hold/Request Buttons
  • Select your Alma/Primo OpenURL resolver as the default:

pick openurl

  • Your changes should show within a few minutes in a live search

This will send your WorldCat requests to Primo VE, where the system will check to see if you own the material, and if not, your Alma Resource Sharing request button should show after login.

WorldCat via Firstsearch:

worldcat openurl

  • Add your Alma/Primo link resolver to the list of OpenURL Servers
  • Call your link whatever you'd like it to see in WorldCat, e.g. "Request Item"
  • Make sure that WorldCat is in the list of databases selected for use with this link:

worldcat databases

  • If you already had your ILLiad OpenURL set up to work with Worldcat, please use this same screen to remove WorldCat from the list of included databases for ILLiad.

This will send your WorldCat requests to Primo VE, where the system will check to see if you own the material, and if not, your Alma Resource Sharing request button should show after login.
